Hard water in Oman — what it means for your villa or apartment
Hard water is a normal household nuisance in many parts of Oman. You may notice white marks on taps, a rough shower screen, scale inside a kettle or a water heater that needs attention more often than expected. In a villa or apartment, the signs can be more noticeable because water may pass through tanks, pumps and long runs of domestic pipe before it reaches a bathroom or kitchen.
What hard water means
Hardness mainly refers to dissolved calcium and magnesium. When water is heated or evaporates on a surface, some minerals form deposits called limescale. Hardness is not the same as high salt or TDS. An electronic descaler focuses on limescale adhesion; it does not remove minerals, lower TDS or make salty water fresh.
Why hard water is common in Oman
Omani homes receive water through municipal supplies, delivered water and private or shared tanks. The mineral profile varies by source and location. Desalinated and blended supplies can still produce scale as water is stored, heated and circulated. Look at your own fixtures: where deposits form, how quickly they return and whether the issue is hardness, sediment, taste or salinity.
What helps with hard water?
Existing deposits need physical cleaning or an appropriate manufacturer-approved descaling process. An electronic descaler such as Eddy uses coils around the incoming cold-water pipe. Its changing electromagnetic field is designed to alter crystal behaviour so new limescale is less likely to stick to surfaces. Minerals stay in the water, and results develop over time rather than appearing as an instant change in water chemistry.
Eddy is salt-free, does not require brine, and does not need pipe cutting for standard installation. It can help protect domestic pipes, taps, heaters and appliances from new scale. It is not a salt softener and does not chemically soften water. If the problem is taste, high salinity or TDS, arrange a suitable filter or RO assessment. Eddy does not remove healthy minerals or lower TDS or salinity.

FAQs
Is hard water the same as salty water? No. Hardness mainly concerns calcium and magnesium; salinity and TDS describe different properties.
Can Eddy remove existing limescale? Eddy helps reduce new limescale sticking. Existing deposits still need cleaning or servicing.
Does Eddy work with PPR pipes? Eddy is designed for common copper, plastic and PPR domestic pipes and standard fitting does not require pipe cutting.
Is a salt softener better? Neither is universally better. A salt softener reduces hardness minerals but needs salt and maintenance; Eddy provides salt-free scale control while keeping minerals in the water.
No chemicals — kinder for skin and hair routines
Eddy does not add salt, acids or other treatment chemicals to your water. Many households find that as limescale becomes easier to manage, everyday showers and washes feel more comfortable. Results vary; Eddy is not a medical treatment and is not a drinking-water filter.
Eddy electronic descaler — salt-free limescale adhesion control; does not remove hardness minerals or lower TDS.
Salt water softener — ion-exchange mineral reduction; needs space, plumbing, salt and ongoing maintenance.
Filter or RO — treatment for selected drinking-water concerns; does not replace whole-home scale control.
Cleaning or descaling — removal of existing deposits; does not provide ongoing prevention.
A straightforward option for Oman homes
Eddy is supplied by Zayyan Investment International SPC, a 100% Mahek-owned company and Middle East distributor for UK Eddy machines. The Eddy electronic descaler costs 99 OMR ex-VAT and is delivered across Oman. It includes DIY fitting guidance and a 365-day money-back offer.
Common signs
White spots and crusty taps appear when drops dry on chrome, glass and ceramic. Heating encourages deposits in kettles and water heaters. Hard water can make soap residue more visible on tiles, basins and shower screens. Dishwashers and washing machines can show deposits where water is repeatedly heated or evaporated.
Roof tanks, pumps and PPR pipes
A roof tank changes the route water takes through the property. A practical descaler position is often on the pipe after the pump feeding the domestic side. Eddy’s coils are designed for common copper, plastic and PPR domestic pipes, normally around 15–25 mm. Do not cut a pipe simply to make the device fit.
