Hard water in Oman: causes, sources and what to do about limescale
Is Oman's water hard? It depends on the source. Groundwater from wells in Oman is often hard; one study of Al-Buraimi wells measured total hardness of up to 341 mg/L. Desalinated mains water is remineralised before supply, so it is usually less hard, but limescale can still build up on taps, glass and appliances where water is heated or evaporates.

What is hard water?
Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium. When it is heated, or when drops dry on a surface, some of those minerals come out as limescale: the white, chalky crust you see on taps and shower glass. Hardness is not the same as salinity or TDS (total dissolved solids). Water can be low in hardness and still taste salty, or be hard and taste fine. Oman's drinking-water standard sets a quality level for total hardness below 200 mg/L and a maximum of 500 mg/L.
Why hard water varies across Oman
Homes in Oman do not all get the same water. Nama Water Services runs a network of 61 desalination plants, 865 wells, 922 reservoirs and tanks, and 475 tanker filling stations. What reaches your tap depends on which of these supplies your area, and on how your building stores the water.
Desalinated mains water
Most of the main network, including the Muscat area, is supplied with desalinated seawater. Reverse osmosis strips out almost all minerals, so the water is then remineralised, for example with carbon dioxide and crushed limestone, before it goes to Nama's reservoirs. That adds back some calcium.
Wells and groundwater
Groundwater takes up minerals from the rock it passes through. Studies of Omani wells have found a wide range, for example from 9 to 341 mg/L in Al-Buraimi. Wellfields are still used to supplement desalinated supply in parts of the network.
Tanker water and roof tanks
Many villas and apartments store water in roof or ground tanks, and some homes rely on tanker deliveries. Hardness depends on where the tanker filled up, which can change. Stored water that sits and warms in a roof tank can leave more visible deposit where it is heated or evaporates.
Is Muscat water hard? Desalination explained
Muscat's mains water is mainly desalinated, so it is generally not as hard as well water from the interior. That's why people disagree about whether "Oman water is hard". Two neighbours can have different experiences. Limescale can still appear in Muscat homes: water evaporating from chrome taps and shower glass in the heat, kettles and dishwashers heating water again and again, tank storage, and any blending with other sources all leave deposits over time. The only way to know your own water is to look at your fixtures, test it, or ask Nama for your area's water quality data.

Signs of limescale at home
- Taps and shower heads: white spots and crust where drops dry on chrome.
- Shower glass and tiles: a cloudy film that comes back soon after cleaning.
- Kettles: a chalky layer or flakes inside.
- Kitchen surfaces and sinks: rings and marks around taps and drains.
- Dishwashers and washing machines: deposits where water is heated over and over, and cloudy glasses.
- Water heaters: may need descaling or a service more often (see our heater guide).
How to check your own water
- Note where deposits form first and how quickly they return after cleaning.
- Use a hardness test strip from a hardware or aquarium shop on cold mains water and on tank water separately.
- Ask Nama Water Services (or Nama Dhofar Services in Dhofar) for the water quality data for your area.
- If the problem is taste, salinity or high TDS rather than scale, that is a filter or RO question, not a descaler one.
What helps with hard water and limescale
Existing scale needs cleaning: vinegar or a manufacturer-approved descaler for kettles, taps and shower heads. To reduce new build-up, the main options are:
- Salt-based softener: removes calcium and magnesium by ion exchange. It needs salt, a drain, space and regular maintenance.
- Electronic descaler: treats the incoming pipe so new limescale is less likely to stick. Minerals stay in the water.
- Filter or RO: for taste, salinity or TDS. Not a scale-control system for the whole house.
